2001 Appalachian Trail Through Hike Journal

2001 Trail Log Introduction

Update as of September 3, 2002: All of the files transcribed by Wendy are included here. I have some notes that I carried home from Maine that need to be transcribed to complete the journal. Presently it is fairly complete through Poplar Ridge shelter just south of the Bigelow Mountain Range in Maine.

This is an almost verbatim transcription of the notes that I sent home during my end-to-end hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2001. My friend Wendy acted as transcriber and editor for these notes while I was hiking. In a few cases Wendy or I have corrected spelling or rewritten an awkward or confusing sentence. My 1981 journal is arranged by week but Wendy chose to group my notes as recieved in my maildrops and I have retained that structure. Wendy's comments are in square brackets and comments added by me after the hike are enclosed in angle brackets. It may help you to understand the entries if you also read my AT 1981 introduction.
