One Day Hike 2009

I didn't finish this year.   I had problems from the very beginning.   Mostly my mistake was ignoring those problems.   I have had recurrent problems with my left ankle which I broke very badly thirty years ago. It bothered me from the start but I did nothing about it until taking a couple of ibuprofin at Violet's Lock (mile 22).   By that time I was already tired from compensating for it.   I also had a severe chafing problem for which I already had a preventative - silk underwear.   But when I got up in the morning I had just thrown them in my daypack figuring I'd put them on somewhere at or near the beginning of the hike.   I didn't.   In fact, I waited until I was seriuosly chafed (bleeding) at mile 28 to put them on.   When I finally put them on it was instant relief but the damage was done.   After breakfast at Seneca I felt better and actually made up some time between there and Edward's Ferry but then the heat set in.   I am not a very good hot weather hiker in the best of circumstances but with the other problems it was too much.   At White's Ferry I called it quits.
